Description:
Fairy Tales for Big Kids

Lego Mindstorm ROBOChallenges
Ages: Incoming 4th grade & older
Dates: August 6-10th  Full - waitlist for interested students
Instructor: Leah Dorr has been the science teacher at the Oak Bluffs School for the past 12 years and most recently started teaching engineering. She LOVES all things science, engineering and math.
Description: Students will build and compete in the following challenges using the Lego Mindstorm EV3 kits & extension packs:
SUGO
Lego + Sumo Wrestling = FUN

Students will learn to build structures, attach & use sensors, pick & attach gears, and code a robot to push another out of a ring. Students will learn the physics of force and motion including Newton's Three Laws. They will also learn the science & math behind a robot that is capable of producing a more considerable force. Students who have already learned the basics of SUGO can increase their skills to be more competitive by learning trick coding techniques, advanced concepts such as torque and additional sensors to become more invincible in the ring.

Hungry, Hungry Robot - build and program a robot to collect all the "Food" and return it to your base.

Catapult Challenge - Create a robot that can collect and launch balls into an end zone before an opponent.

CHEMISTRY FOR MAKERS
Ages: Incoming 5th grade & older
Dates: July 30 -3rd FULL - sign up for waiting list only
Instructor: Leah Dorr has been the science teacher at the Oak Bluffs School for the past 12 years and most recently started teaching engineering. She LOVES teaching all things science, engineering and math.
Description:

Chemistry is all around, and we can use it to make things. Students will learn the chemistry of different processes used to make materials and then apply them to solve problems, make things move, and create solutions. We will be experimenting with adding or taking away energy and seeing how that changes our creations. Some of the mediums we will be learning to use include combining epoxy resins, electroplating metals, creating heat sensitive clay, metal soldering, forming crystals, and painting with heat.

RollerCoaster Math
Ages: Incoming 4th grade & older
Dates: August 6-10th ONLY 3 SLOTS LEFT
Instructor: Eve Heyman has been the extraordinary 7/8 math teacher at Oak Bluffs School for the past 20 years.
Description:
Love roller coasters and water slides at your favorite theme park? Ever wondered how they work? Join us for some creative discovery all about the magic of roller coaster math and science. We will discover how to construct a roller coaster online in two-dimensions, and then take that to the building phase in three-dimensions. We will have some challenges about longest, slowest, fastest, most sections, least sections, etc. If you sign up for both weeks, we will move from roller coasters created with simple lines to roller coasters with curves, spirals, and loop-de-loops. The only limitation is your imagination! Let’s build our own STEAM MV theme park this summer!
